Manuel came from a very strict household and once he had a taste of freedom in Melbourne, his focus waivered and he did not do well in his studies. He failed many subjects and was recently given notice by RMIT University that unless his academic results improved in the current semester, the University will have no alternative but to terminate his enrolment and inform the Department of Home Affairs about his failure. However, rather than studying harder, Manuel continued his wayward behaviour, preferring to go out to nightclubs and dancing the night away. One of the places Manuel frequented was a karaoke bar in China Town, owned by Lisa Hunh, aged 35, an Australian citizen, who at the age of 25, migrated to Australia from Vietnam. Over the time he frequented the karaoke bar, Manuel became quite friendly with Lisa. During a discussion with Lisa, Manuel confided about the notice he got from RMIT University. Lisa told him that was no big deal, as he could marry her and he would become a permanent resident.
