Many hotels find it difficult to retain housekeeping staff. Many people say that it is because the work of hotel housekeeping is physically demanding and mundane, housekeeping wages are among the lowest in the industry, and/or being a hotel housekeeper cannot be considered the most glamorous position. Given this, what do you think are good ways to keep housekeeping employees motivated to perform at their highest capabilities and make them satisfied with their job? Read the two motivation theories of Abraham Maslow (1964) and Frederick Herzberg (1964) in Page 96-98 in the textbook and in the article provided in this week or in Supplementary Materials (Motivation Theories). Then provide your opinion based on those theories and then respond to another classmate’s posting. Each posting should be at least 100 words in length. This discussion board will close at 6 pm on 9/28 (Fri). Late submissions will not be graded.
The two articles below are good reading materials for this topic:
• Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of work motivation tested empirically on seasonal workers in hospitality and tourism by Christine Lundberg, Anna Gudmundson, and Tommy Andersson (2009).
• Motivating Your Staff to Provide Outstanding Service by Michael Sturman and Robert Ford (2011). These articles are available in “Supplementary Materials.”
I have also attached below a video entitled “Let’s talk About Recognition.” Hilton Worldwide runs a company-wide employee motivation program called Hilton Recognition. Through this program, managers and employees of all Hilton family hotels share their motivation and recognition stories and tools. I would recommend you visit its website, http://www.hilton-recognition.com, so you can see what Hilton Worldwide hotels do for satisfying their employees.
I also recommend you watch Dan Pink's TED talk on motivation. He talks about how internal rewards and external rewards differ in leading to better
performance. To watch the video, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrkrvAUbU9Y. His book entitled, "Drive- the Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us" is also recommended to read ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFlvor6ZHdY).
