Many students believe that art is always open to individual interpretation -- and some instructors teach this, as well. But artists usually have something specific in mind when they create their work -- if not at the start, then by the time they finish. They carefully arrange the features, including the symbols, to point to some truth they wish to express. This doesn't mean that some elements can't be more general or that there aren't several possibilities for the same symbol that work equally, but one criterion that critics use when evaluating the success of art is the control artists have in making their vision clear to the audience. In other words, how many people in the audience "get it"? The greatest art not only communicates the artist's vision but does so in a way that is fresh and unique. Are there any works -- including those outside of your genre/text -- where you believe the artist has been successful in this regard? Why do you think so? Does the work seem better as a result?
