Mao Zedong was a strong leader, and his leadership style was one of the most remarkable elements of his presidency of the People's Republic of China. He was a man of ideas who was not afraid to take risky steps to put them into action. Mao believed in the power of the collective and worked extremely hard to unite the Chinese people under his leadership. Hence, he implemented the People's war, also called Protracted People's War, which is a Maoist military strategy. The basic concept behind people's war is to maintain the support of the population and draw the enemy deep into the countryside to stretch their supply lines. Which the population will bleed dry through a mix of mobile warfare and guerrilla warfare. It was implemented by Mao when the Chinese were against the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II and in the Chinese Civil War as well. Mao was a firm believer in the power of ideational leadership, and he believes that by spreading his principles, he was able to urge his supporters to act.

Mao Zedong was a leader who constantly sought to innovate and improve his approach to statecraft. He doesn't hesitate to question the current status quo and advocates for new ideas and technologies to achieve his goals. Mao consistently applied his "seek truth from facts" approach, and by doing it, he arrived at a view of reality that contradicted some deeply entrenched notions in the communist movement at the time. The mainstream view holds that industrialized countries with higher productivity and a larger proletariat must be the force that drives the world revolutionary movement forward, while colonial and semi-colonial countries must be behind this process. On the other hand, he insisted on a firm class stand and always safeguarded the interests of the working people. He realized very clearly that the proletariat and poor peasants were the only class forces capable of revitalizing China and thus contributing to the world's revolutionary movement.

Mao was also a risk-taking leader who was not afraid to make bold decisions. He was willing to oppose other foreign powers and lead China in an unexpected direction. In 1950, thousands of Chinese troops were sent to aid the North Koreans. "Mao Zedong was adamant about helping out his North Korean allies. He wanted to improve China's prestige in the communist world by what he saw as freeing South Koreans from U.S. imperialist rule," Kim says. The reason behind this decision is that Mao saw China's responsible for the socialist camp. Also, he was enraged that the US Seventh Fleet had been sent into the Taiwan Strait. That made him very concerned about the safety of China's northeastern borders. Furthermore, he wanted to enhance the Sino-Soviet alliance, so as to consolidate the CCP's new regime in China.
