Marcellus Shale Drilling Reservoir Marcellus shale drilling produces millions of gallons of saltwater that leaves the ground with the methane. Sometimes this water is put into an open reservoir on site. This reservoir receives rainwater (containing no salt) at 2.6in/hr and evaporation of pure water at a rate of 2mm/day. The saltwater enters the reservoir at 106gal/day with a concentration of 0.6molLNaCl. Now assume that there is no flowrate out and that the accumulation of salt is very small so we can assume that the concentration of salt remains constant (because the rainwater and evaporation is low). Also assume the density of the water doesn't change with time. Initially the height of the water is 10ft and the area is 1000ft2. You can assume that the area doesn't change with height.
A. Draw the diagram and determine the initial conditions.
B. Write out a material balance and solve the height using variables.
C. Calculate the height after 0.1 days.
D. Here we are assuming that the area doesn't change with height. How would you re-solve it if the area changed with height?
