Mariam is a citizen of Spain. She is 28 years old and looking to an exciting career as a hotel manager and maybe one day a hotel owner. In pursue of her dreams, she starts a three-year Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management, as a full-time student at the University of Guelph. She already completed two years of her study program. She is being working part time as a supervisor with Timmy Coffee Shop for almost a year now.
Her accompanying spouse Dimitro is very sick, and Mariam requested an authorized leave from school for a period of three months to take care of him. Her authorized leave from school starts on October 1 and ends on Dec 31. She also requested a leave from her work for a period of one month starting October 1 and ending October 31. Her employer is expecting her to resume her part-time position by November 1.
Mariam is now in her third week of October, and her spouse's medical condition remains unstable. Mariam is wondering if she can resume work on Nov 1st and how an additional three months leave beyond December 31 would impact her PGWP.
- What advice would you provide to Mariam given her actual authorized leave of study for a period of three months?
- What advice would you provide Mariam given her plans for an additional three months leave beyond December 31?
- What advice would you provide Mariam considering her plans to apply for a post-graduate work permit upon completion of her study program?
- How might Cochran and Pistone help you craft your advice to Mariam?
