Mariel is a 4th grader who is 9 years old. She was diagnosed with pervasive depression and anxiety in preschool after it was determined she was being abused at home; she was removed from her family and placed in foster care. Child Protective Services has been involved with her care ever since and has provided her with weekly therapy; she is with a loving foster family with several foster siblings. She has had ongoing difficulty developing relationships with both peers and adults, and she is frequently inattentive in class as she disappears into her own world. She is underperforming academically for her abilities as a result. In school, she has 60 minutes a week resource support from the special education teacher focused on reading; Mariel seems to appreciate the one on one time. She is a naturally compliant child who is strong in the area of visual arts, particularly painting.
