Mary Smith has a cancer that has not responded to conservative treatment. Her doctor, Dr. B, recommends she have a stem cell transplant. Under the best of circumstances, the transplant will be a difficult procedure requiring months of recovery and is often accompanied by serious, and even possibly life-threatening complications.
