- ' MAT 20105 Elementary Statistics Descnpon A lot of data is correlated. In some cases, this is because one variable causes another. In other cases, things are correlated and neither thing caused the other. I would like for you to think of one such example. 2 variables must be (believably) correlated, but one clearly doesn't cause the other. Thus, your response should have 4 parts to it... ~Thing 1 (1 point) ~Thing 2 (1 point) .__._____ ~Ridiculous claim- thing 1 causes thing 2 or thing 2 causes thing 1 (or both -you choose!) (1 point) J ~Something along the lines of "obviously the ridiculous claim isn't true\". (1 point) The real reason for the correlated relationship is probably because... (please make a reasonable guess) (1 point) My example- ~Thing1 is the number of packages of ice cream sold a day ~Thing 2 is number of bottles of sunscreen sold a day As sunscreen sales go up, so do the sales of ice cream. Obviously, it's because the smell of sunscreen causes people to crave more ice cream, so every ice cream shop should spray sunscreen flavored perfume. Obviously, this isn't true. The real reason for this correlated relationship is because both purchases are very likely to happen when the weather is hot. The true factor is the weather causing both of these things as opposed to one of these things directly causing the other
