The project is designed for students to get some experience of typical statistical investigation in real world problems using relatively a small data set. Consider yourself as a statistician participating in a consulting project, who is going to solve the problem brought in by your client using the statistical knowledge you have. The analysis report should be well organized with proper use of terminology and quoting of references if necessary. The report should be typed into a word, with numerical and graphical outputs properly presented and organized. The analysis is due on 13th Oct 2021.

No any late work or hand-written reports will be accepted.

Instructions

  • Your response should be submitted in a word document.
  • Please include a cover page with your name, course name and semester (Fall 2021) on it.
  • Please include page numbers.
  • Round mean, variance, IQR, median values to the second decimal place. Probabilities should be rounded to 4th decimal place.

Problems

To answer question 1 to 4, please use the Melanoma_ Data.xlsx file on the blackboard.

  1. Find the Five number summary plus mean, variance, standard deviation (SD) and Inter Quartile Range (IQR) for Age, Tumor Size in mm, and Survival time in months. What can you say about the shape of the distribution of the three variables? [15 points]
  2. Draw a histogram for Age of Patient at Diagnosis and their tumor sizes. What can you say about the distribution of Age and tumor size? Do you agree with the answer in question 1? [10 points]
  3. From the given sample of Melanoma patients, which year has the higher diagnosis number of patients? Hint: Use Bar Chart show you the frequency. [10 points]
  4. What can you say about the distribution of Survival time? Right skewed, left skewed or Symmetric. In this case, what would be the best summary measurement to use; meanSD or medianIQR? [10 points]

5. Draw pie charts for Gender and Stage variables. Comment on the percentages (look at pie-slices for each variable), on what you see. [10 points]

6. Find the probability of having a Tumor size less than 5 mm. Also, find the probability that a subject will have a melanoma cancer with stage 0 or 1. Using the conditional probability, find the probability that a subject will have a tumor size less than 5mm given that he/she has a stage 0 or 1 melanoma cancer. (Hint: Probability=Number of subjects with certain characteristics/ Total sample size). [25 points]

7. If we had a sample of 100 subjects, and the probability of diagnosing with melanoma cancer is 0.005, find the probability that at most 2 subjects will diagnose with melanoma cancer? (Hint: Think about the most suitable probability distribution) [20 points]
