Matt is 17 years old and he recently purchased a car from a used car dealer. The total purchase price was $5500 and he made a $500 down payment but financed the rest through the car dealer. The contract is between Matt and the car dealer, and under the terms of the contract Matt is supposed to make payments of $150 per month. However, Matt isn't very responsible and he recently decided he would just stop making payments on the car.

It seems that Matt has been up to some other things too. He has a 16 year old girlfriend named Olivia who is considered mature for her age. They've been seeing each other for a few months and one of the things they enjoy doing together is making videos of themselves having sex. These videos are very sexually explicit. They didn't share these videos with anyone. However, recently, Olivia left her phone on the kitchen counter and her mother couldn't help herself - she grabbed Olivia's phone (which was unlocked) to see what her daughter had been up to lately, and she was shocked to see one of the videos that Matt and Olivia made. Olivia's thinks Matt manipulated Olivia into making the video and she is so angry she is considering calling the police and reporting this matter.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Olivia has bigger problems than her mother snooping around on her phone. Olivia has just learned that she is pregnant. Of course she doesn't want her mother to know, and she also doesn't want to keep the baby. She makes an appointment at the abortion clinic to see about having the pregnancy terminated.

Matt has just learned that Olivia is pregnant, and he is furious. He says that Olivia tricked him - that she told him she was using contraception when she wasn't - and that she has deliberately become pregnant in order to collect child support from him. One day during a confrontation with Olivia, Matt becomes violent and punches Olivia in the stomach. Olivia suffers a miscarriage and the fetus does not survive (the death of the fetus occurred before the miscarriage). Olivia wants Matt to be charged with murder, or at least manslaughter.

QUESTION: Can the car dealer currently enforce the contract for the car purchase against Matt? Is there any circumstance under which the car dealer may be able to enforce the contract? Explain.

QUESTION: If Olivia's mother calls the police and they recommend child pornography charges against Matt, do you think such charges would succeed in court (would Matt be convicted)? Explain.

QUESTION: Does Olivia have the legal authority to make her own decision to have an abortion? Explain.

QUESTION: Should Matt be charged with a homicide offence (such as murder or manslaughter)? Explain.
