Measured g: % error: Questions: 1 Based on your graph, what is the weight of 2.0kg object? 2 Is your weight more, less, or same on the moon? Explain 3 Is your mass more, less, or same on the moon? Explain. 4. Is your weight more, less, or same on Mars? Explain 5. Is your mass more, less, or same on Mars? Explain. Title: Mass and Weight Objective: You will distinguish the difference between mass and weight. Apparatus: mass box, spring scale or digital newton meter, stand Background Theory: Mass and weight are different concepts in physics. Mass is the amount of matter contained in an object. Weight is a force acting on an object due to earth's gravitational force. Newton's second law states that force acting on an object is equal to mass times acceleration. In equation, it can be written as F= ma where F: force, m: mass, and a: acceleration. For an object in free fall, weight is acting on the object in free fall due to earth's gravitational force and acceleration is equal to g. W=mg. To determine g, weight can be measured for a given mass. From a graph of weight vs. mass, slope can be calculated to be equal to g. Experimental Method: Place a stand on a lab table and attach a clamp on a rod. Then hang the Digital Newton Meter on the clamp. Zero the reading without any mass on the hook. Hang 50g mass on the hook and measure weight from the Digital Newton Meter. Increase mass to 100g and measure weight again. Continue measurement with an increment of 50g up to 500g. Fill the data table. Draw a graph of mass vs weight on a graph paper with weight in yaxis and mass in x-axis. Data
