Melanie Wis in Toronto on business. staying at a hotel in Yorkville. She's had two days of back-to-back meetings with clients. and it's now the end of the second day. Exhausted and exhilarated (her meetings went very well]. Melanie is looking forward to enjoying her last night in Toronto. She decides she'll do some shopping and then have dinner and maybe see a movie at the Varsity. Bryan Wis a sales associate at Holt Renfrew on mat. He works in the women's leather goods department. where products can retail for up to $50,000. Bryan has been with Holt's for four years. during which time he's been promoted from shipping and receiving. It's a Tuesday night. and things are on the quiet side. although there are one or two women browsing near his section of the oor. Bryan is leaning against the cash desk. gossiping with his coworker mum Bevan. who's working in the nearby scarf. glove and accessories department. \"But seriously. you had to be there. She looked like some sort of street person. but she swept in here all high and mighty and asked to see the new Chanel clutch. Can you believe it?\" says Bryan. \"Drag. That's retail. We can't stop 'em from coming in here.\" m replies. Off to the side of his oor. Bryan can tell someone has walked in and is looking at the summer straw and linen bags relatively inexpensive products compared to the leather bags. He turns back to m \"So I said to her 'Can I help you?'- but you know. without really engaging. so she got the point." Bryan goes on. \"What did she do?\" Masks. \"Exactly what I expected her to do she sort of got nervous. turned around and left.\" Bryan says. smiling. \"I think you've got someone who wants to buy. Bryan.\" W5. discreetly gesturing towards Melanie m who is now looking at a small bright green leather purse. \"Oh god. Wednesday night. so depressing. Hold on. I'm sure I'll be back.\" he says. Bryan walks up to Melanie. He says. \"Hello. can I answer any questions about that Michael W\" \"Thanks. but I'm just looking for now." Melanie says. Bryan's eyebrows rise involuntarily (he's heard this line a thousand times}. "Well, I'm by the luggage if you decide you're interested in anything.\" he says. Melanie nds this young man's tone a bit rude given the situation. but she takes the high road instead and says. \"I'll let you know.\" After some more browsing, Melanie decides she's probably not going to buy anything. so she heads for the exit. * Someone at one of her meetings earlier recommended Cafe Nervosa in Yorkville for dinner. so she decides to go there. At the front door there is a hostess. The place is nicely busy. \"Hi," says Melanie to the hostess. \"I'd like a table for one.\" The hostess looks Melanie up and down. as if this is a strange request. \"I'm not sure if anything's available right now. could you give me a sec?\" she says. \"Sure.\" Melanie replies. A few minutes later. the hostess comes back. \"I don't think there's anything available for at least an hour.\" the hostess says. This doesn't make sense to Melanie. who can see two empty seats at the bar and at least one empty table. \"What if I just wait here: maybe a spot at the bar. or that table for two over there that looks empty?\" Melanie asks. suspiciously. \"That table's not available. sorry,\" the hostess says. \"I see.\" Melanie replies. \"Is it reserved?\" \"Um, no it's just...\" the hostess looks a bit ustered. \"That's okay. I'm going to try my luck across the street.\" says Melanie. hungry and a bit pissed off at this point. * Luckily, Melanie enjoys her greasy diner dinner across the street at Flo's. Leaving the diner. she realizes it's only 8:30 pm and she can still make the late show of the new Woody Allen comedy that's playing nearby at the Varsity theatre. Walking along mama. and then WSL she looks approvingly at the various high-end boutique windows in this part of the city. At the top of the escalator in front of the theatre. she notices it's not that busy. She walks up to the counter where a couple of young women have their backs turned to her. She waits for what seems like at least 3|] seconds. They don't turn to face her. \"Excuse me.\" Melanie says. her patience coming to an end. One of the young women turns around, but she's not smiling in fact she looks like she'd rather do anything but sell a movie ticket. \"I'd like a ticket for the Woody Allen movie at 9:00\". \"Machines are over there.\" says the young woman. \"Excuse me?\" Melanie replies. \"My cash is closed,\" the young woman says, turning back around to talk to her friend. A bit demoralized by the reaction she's received from various people in Yorkville this evening. Melanie simply says. \"I'd like to speak to your manager.\
