Mergers and acquisitions in the aviation industry have been around well before deregulation; however, since deregulation, the industry has seen an increase in the number of mergers and acquisitions. Mergers and acquisitions are not only confined to airlines, but also the production side of aviation. In the 1930s, US aircraft manufactures also owned some of the airlines. However, they were pressured by the US congress to separate their manufacturing and their air transport business. The government viewed the joint ownership of aircraft production and airline ownership as a monopolistic practice.
