MGMT 1007 - Tutorial 7 Working with Work Breakdown Structure and Time-Phased Budget Your company manufactures remote controlled vehicles for the toy industry. These vehicles are life like replicas of real world vehicles. You have been asked to manage a project that will create a new vehicle for this coming Christmas season. You can choose to create an aircraft, boat or land vehicle. Your team will design the vehicles outer body style and the inner frame to support the motor, drive and control systems. Your body can be made from steel, aluminum or carbon fibre. The inner frame will be either aluminum or carbon fibre. You will purchase the motor and control systems from one of two suppliers. Two suppliers produce the motors and control systems that you can use. METCON and ASHBURY TECHNOLOGIES. You have worked with METCON in the past and you have been very happy with their quality and delivery records. ASHBURY TECH you have not worked with before as they are new to the industry and are promoting a new technology that they have created that might revolutionize the industry. It is not used in many vehicles yet and is therefore unproven. METCON has recently transferred a large portion of their production to a new plant in Mexico in order to cut costs. ASHBURY'S plant is located just 2 hours away in Oshawa from your plant here in London. ASHBURY's workers are just negotiating their first labour contract since their recent expansion. Your company will need to source new assembly tooling to manufacture the toy. You have an existing line that you could retrofit with the new assembly tooling, however it is older technology and there have been increasing issues with production and quality. A new line would allow you to introduce new technology to increase production and quality, however there would be a learning curve for your operators and maintenance staff to learn the line. You need to have a firm design choice, supplier list, and assembly equipment decision to show senior management in 1 month from today. You are expected to start production 4 months from design approval so that the toys can be on the shelves for the Christmas season. You can source your steel and aluminum from local suppliers, but your carbon fiber will come from FIBERTECH, a plant based in Northern Michigan. You have used them in the past and have been somewhat satisfied with their quality and delivery on the last two projects that you ran. They have recently been bought out by a large company from Germany and are currently undergoing restructuring of all their departments. You have heard that there have been a large number of changes to the Management team and that a modernization of the plant including new process equipment is currently underway. Tutorial Tasks: 1.
