Miami Wellness Center (25 points)

Miami Wellness Center (MWC) founded in 2018 is a walk-in ONLY clinic that serves low-income middle aged clients in the Metro-Miami area. The clinic provides individualized wellness visits (e.g., check blood pressure, weight management, stress management, etc.), and group social, nutrition, and fitness classes to its clients. Amy Rouse, a Nurse Practitioner and Founder of MWC, is the only wellness provider on staff at any time and she works 6 hours/day (clinic open 8am-2:30pm, with two 15 minute breaks). She does have one administrative assistant to check clients in, one social worker, and one food educator on staff, but they provide the classes and are not licensed to provide a wellness visit. Unlike traditional primary care clinics that usually see their patients once per year, her clients often come once per week and her staff has developed a great relationship with them and is well respected in the neighborhood.

MWC thinks that clients arrive on average every 15 minutes to see the wellness providers and each visit takes on average 10 minutes. MWC hired a group of FIU students, including you, to collect client arrival data and confirm their inter-arrival rate estimate. Your team visited the clinic one morning between 8a and 9am and collected the following data on patient arrivals and queue length.

Client Number Time when Client Arrived Queue Length

1 8:00am 0

2 8:25am 0

3 8:30am 1

4 8:55am 0

5 9:02am 1

1.Do these data suggest that the interarrival rate,is accurate or not? Based on these data, can Amy say that she has consistent arrivals every 15 minutes? Please explain (3 Points).

2.What additional analysis could be done to further understand and become more accurate regarding the arrival of clients to MWC? (3 Points)

Additional analysis during busy periods, showed that a new patient walks-in every 15 minutes (with a standard deviation of 15 minutes). A typical visit takes 10 minutes, yet the time Amy Rouse spends with patients is variable. The standard deviation of visit time is 10 minutes.

3.On average, how long do clients wait to see Amy? Please show your work. (4 Points)

4.On average how many clients are waiting in line to see Amy? Please show your work. (4 Points)

Miami Wellness Center in the Future - 2025

The wellness movement in the U.S. has increased such that Miami Wellness Center's business has grown significantly. Now MWC has 10 locations along the Florida East Coast and there are 5 wellness providers on staff at each location. Peak demand at the Miami Wellness Center is now 24 clients per hour, the arrivals of clients is random with inter-arrival times that had a coefficient of variation of 1. If all 5 wellness providers are working, they can serve on average 30 clients / hour. Assume the standard deviation of visit time is still 10 minutes.

5.At the Miami location, on average, how many clients are waiting in the queue if all five wellness providers are working? (5 Points)

6.What is the current level of capacity utilization? What would be the impact on server utilization if the standard deviation of visit time could be reduced to 2 minutes? Please explain (3 Points)

7.What is the impact on service when one of the wellness providers calls in sick and does not show up for work? (3 Points)

(All data has been provided. Please refer to the chart for the arrival times and waiting timed for the patients)
