Michael Dawson, in The Consumer Trap, gives a definition of totalitarianism: "the thorough and detailed domination of all major spheres of lifestate, economy, and personal lifeby a ruling elite". We usually associate totalitarianism with the government or state, such as fascism or communism. But Dawson argues that, because of the role of big business marketing, capitalist societies can lead to "market totalitarianism"
