Michael owns and operates a drug store. Because business is often slow during the day, and because he worries about robberies, Michael regularly brings his dog, Wisey, to work with him. Wisey has been a bit of a mixed blessing over the years. He has provided good companionship and his aggressive nature has discouraged teenagers from hanging around the store. At the same time, Wisey has occasionally frightened customers and on a couple of occasions, he has tried to bite small children.

Michael's luck recently ran out when Wisey did, in fact, attack and severely injure Lora, a young girl who was visiting the store with her father. Although Michael feels very sorry for Lora, he denies that he is responsible for her medical bills. As he correctly points out, he did not intentionally cause Wisey to attack Lora. On the contrary, he took every reasonable precaution to prevent the incident from occurring. Michael, therefore, insists that he cannot be held liable in tort.
