Michigan University has developed a points system for student admissions. The total allotment of points is 100. The breakdown of points for each criteria is as follows: Grade point average/SAT/ACT scores 30 points; 2. Special talents-10 points; 3 Extra curricular activities-10 points; 4 Rural residency-10 points; 5. Legacy-10 points; and 6. Minority status-30 points Minority status is defined as "underrepresented minorities including Native American, Hispanic or African American". The facts reveal that if a student has the minimum grade point average for admission (2.8) and is one of the three minority groups identified above, his or her chance for admission is nearly 100%. An Asian-American student who has a 2.8 grade point average applies for admission but is denied. The student sues claiming that Central Michigan's point allotment based on race is unconstitutional.
