Micro cost/benefit analysis #2 The nation is trying to figure out how to improve our education system. One solution is the idea of year- round education. Year-round school programs are based on one of two different concepts: single-track, which releases all students for breaks at the same time throughout the year together, and multi-track, which staggers student breaks and effectively keeps the school building occupied year-round. Originally used to help alleviate school overcrowding, other schools decided to switch with the hopes that it might improve test scores. Today, over 2 million children in 400 school districts across 46 states attend some form of year-round schooling. Some people advocate for all schools to go year-round. Of course, there are both costs and benefits of year-round schooling. Carefully read the information below, and then do three things with the data. (1) Make two columns (one for costs and the other for benefits) and place each piece of information in the correct column. (2) Prioritize each list, from most important to least important. (3) Write a three-paragraph analysis. Paragraphs one and two should explain why you feel the top two costs and top two benefits are the most important. Finally, paragraph three is your analysis, based on your interpretation of all the facts listed below, explain whether you believe the county should undertake this plan or not. The paper should be typed and no more than one page in length. 1. Schools that use the multi-track system allow districts to make better use of their limited resources because more students can attend each school without overcowding. 2. Schools that implement year-round schooling have seen a drop in absenteeism amongst students. 3. One issue is that extracurricular activities such as sports, may be scheduled across vacation breaks, thus reducing time off for some students. 4. Year-round schooling leaves no time for high school students to find summer jobs and internships.. 5. Students forget less information because they are not off for 3 months every summer. 6. Schools on the year-round calendar report less student and teacher burnout. 7. For schools on the multi-track system, facility maintenance becomes a problem (there is not a large block of time when the school has no students). 8. It can create irregular vacation schedules for families. 9. Of course, it also allows for vacation at different times of the year which can fit some parents schedules better than the current system. 10. Minorities and ESL students appear to do much better under most forms of year- round schooling (again because there is more consistent practice without large breaks in the year to forget what has been learned). 11. Schools on a multi-track system need more storage space (to store the materials of teachers who are off-track). This costs a little more money and takes up open space on school campuses. 12. Schools, in mild climates, may have to spend more (mainly on air conditioning) to stay open during the summer. 13. Under the current cloud of COVID, multi-track systems could allow more space for social distancing and help kids that have fallen behind due to school closures to catch up more quickly.
