Miss Jago is a barrister and she has been appearing in court for the past few days, representing Amanda Rivers. The court hearing has been adjourned until tomorrow and Miss Jago is walking back to the Chambers where she works. On the way, she receives a telephone call from Amanda Rivers. Amanda has finished giving her evidence in court but she now informs Miss Jago that part of her evidence was a lie. If this becomes known, then it will be very detrimental to Amanda's case. After the telephone call ends, Miss Jago feels like she is in a terrible professional predicament as to whether she should reveal this information to the court tomorrow. When Miss Jago eventually arrives at the Chambers, her clerk tells her that there are some brand new instructions on a totally different case. The new instructions are for Miss Jago to represent a woman called Grace, who the clerk says is a very wealthy person with plenty of money to hire a barrister. The police have arrested and charged Grace with an alleged public order offence, including an alleged assault on an anti-abortion campaigner. The alleged victim had been protesting outside an abortion clinic. Grace denies all the charges and she intends to plead "not guilty" at trial. Miss Jago has often successfully defended people accused of public order and assault offences, but as a Roman Catholic she has strong personal views against abortion. Miss Jago therefore really does not want to represent Grace but she is unsure if she is allowed to refuse to accept these instructions.
