This 1500 words does not include the in-text references for each article). Note: This document has 9 pages in total Description and Specific Requirements In this assignment you will present a discussion of two (2) media articles that you have read and reviewed during the trimester. The media article needs to be published on/after June 1, 2022, nevertheless, the business ethics issues covered can predate June 1, 2022. Each article must be from the media source (for example, newspaper such as The Age, New York Times article, magazine article, internet article). The media articles that you select must have at least 200 words of text. Please note that academic journal articles are not regarded as media source for the purpose of this assignment and if used you will be given a zero for that article. The articles must be concerned with issues of a business ethics nature. If you are not sure of the articles applicability please think through the situation before using it, perhaps choose another one that you are sure fits what is required. The unit team cannot give you an assessment of the articles applicability. As this is a third-year unit, we expect students to take responsibility for their own learning decisions, therefore deciding on the articles that you choose is a part of the assessment process. A reminder that identifying and discussing the media articles discussion is part of the assessment evaluation process. Please ensure that your articles are business ethics related and do not cover social, cultural or political issues. Sometimes there is a fine line and if you are not sure, then choose another article which clearly outlines a business ethics issue(s). The discussion of each article must contain:
  • the title of the media article.
  • the media from which it was obtained: i.e. newspaper or magazine name, internet site location.
  • the date of the article (it must be dated on/after June 1, 2022; if not that article will score 0/25).
  • an overview of the essence of the article with a brief discussion of the identified ethical issue(s).
  • a more in-depth discussion of the business ethical issues [starting point chapters 3, 5, 10, 12]. How is each business ethics issue(s) defined and in what way do these issue(s) present themselves in the article? Specifically report on what happened; why it happened, factors which contributed, and consequences
  • who are the stakeholders being impacted (now and in the future) by the business ethics issue(s) and how? Briefly discuss impact (positive and/or negative) on each stakeholder [starting point chapter 2].
  • a discussion that links the essence of the article and ethical issues(s) to the theory or framework [starting point chapters 2, 6, 7, 8, 11] (referenced theory to support your ideas is expected and will be deemed as essential)*.
  • your recommendations (that are realistic and practical) as a manager to resolve the issues identified in the article. If no resolution has been mentioned in the article, you can give your suggestions of how to resolve the issues here. If a resolution has been mentioned, discuss whether you would had resolved the issue in the same manner or other ways, and why/not.
  • a conclusion in which you give an opinion on the articles ethical issue(s).
  • an academic reference list that is constructed correctly (using Harvard format).

You can also use any theory that maybe relevant to your discussion and is not covered as part of the unit content. You must include a copy of the article with your assignment, else your assignment will NOT be marked until after the exams. In these circumstances, you will receive a maximum of 25/50. Submission You are to submit your assignment in the individual Assignment Dropbox in the MMM 343 CloudDeakin unit site on or before the due date. When uploading your assignment, name your document using the following syntax: first name_your Deakin student ID number_[unitcode].doc (or .docx). For example, AAAA_BBBB_123456789_ABC123.doc. Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting collusion and/or plagiarism, or another breach of academic integrity. When you submit an assignment through your CloudDeakin unit site, you will receive an email to your Deakin email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should check that you can see your assignment in the Submissions view of the Assignment Dropbox folder after upload, and check for, and keep, the email receipt for the submission. You must keep a backup copy of every assignment you submit, until the marked assignment has been returned to you. In the unlikely event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit your backup copy. Note: Building evidence of your experiences, skills and knowledge (Portfolio) - Building a portfolio that evidences your skills, knowledge and experience will provide you with a valuable tool to help you prepare for interviews and to showcase to potential employers. There are a number of tools that you can use to build a portfolio. You are provided with cloud space through OneDrive, or through the Portfolio tool in the Cloud Unit Site, but you can use any storage repository system that you like. Remember that a Portfolio is YOUR tool. You should be able to store your assessment work, reflections, achievements and artefacts in YOUR Portfolio. Once you have completed this assessment piece, add it to your personal Portfolio to use and showcase your learning later, when applying for jobs, or further studies. Curate your work by adding meaningful tags to your artefacts that describe what the artefact represents. Marking and feedback The marking rubric for this task is available in the MMM 343 CloudDeakin unit site - in the Assessment folder (under Assessment Resources). It is always a useful exercise to familiarise yourself with the criteria before starting and submitting any assessment task. Criteria act as a boundary around the task and help identify what assessors are looking for specifically in your submission. The criteria are drawn from the units learning outcomes ensuring they align with appropriate graduate attribute/s. Identifying the standard you aim to achieve is also a useful strategy for success and to that end, familiarising yourself with the descriptor for that standard is highly recommended. Students who submit their work by the due date will receive their marks and feedback on CloudDeakin 15 working days after the submission date - unless it is being withheld for a reason. Assignments submitted after the due date and time (either due to late submission within 5 days limit, or because of extension) will receive their marks and feedback on CloudDeakin 15 working days after their respective submission date. Accordingly, students who submit on January 10th by 20:00AEST will receive their marks and feedback on CloudDeakin on 2nd February 2023. If you had submitted on time by the due date, and did not receive your assignment marks and feedback, check your Deakin email address to check any correspondence received from the unit chair. Extensions Extensions will only be granted for exceptional and/or unavoidable circumstances outside the students control. Students seeking an extension for an assignment prior to the due date should apply directly by completing the Assignment and Online Test Extension Application Form. Requests for extensions will not be considered after 10:00 AEST, January 10th 2023. Applications for special consideration after the due date must be submitted via StudentConnect. Note that work that is submitted late without an approved extension will be subject to a marking penalty as per the late submission guidelines, or may not be marked at all. In the latter circumstances, the submitted assignment will NOT be marked until after the exams and you will receive a maximum of 25/50. Late submission The following marking penalties will apply if you submit an assessment task after the due date without an approved extension: 5% will be deducted from available marks for each day up to five days, and work that is submitted more than five days after the due date will not be marked and will receive 0% for the task. 'Day' means calendar day for electronic submissions. The Unit Chair may refuse to accept a late submission where it is unreasonable or impracticable to assess the task after the due date. Calculation of the late penalty is as follows: this is based on the assignment being due on a Tuesday at 20:00AEST
  • 1 day late: submitted after Tuesday 20:00 and before Wednesday 23:59 5% penalty.
  • 2 days late: submitted after Wednesday 23:59 and before Thursday 23:59 10% penalty.
  • 3 days late: submitted after Thursday 23:59 and before Friday 23:59 15% penalty.
  • 4 days late: submitted after Friday 23:59 and before Saturday 23:59 20% penalty.
  • 5 days late: submitted after Saturday 23:59 and before Sunday 23:59 25% penalty.
To illustrate the above with example for the MMM343 assignment that is worth 50%. 5% penalty for each day that the assignment is late, without an extension:

  • minus 5 marks for 2 days (10% penalty),

  1. We would accept issues that have gone from business ethics issues to legal issues.
By this statement, we mean that often behaviour begins as unethical and over time may become illegal. Often people convicted of criminal intent continue to appeal and protest their innocence and still cannot see that they have done anything wrong. Nonetheless, you should still be able to clearly identify and discuss an ethical issue from business perspective and differentiate it from legal aspects.
  1. Topics that you can use in your theory or framework discussion. Should you confine it just to weeks 1-7?
As this unit is at third year level, you can use any theory or framework that relates to business ethics regardless of having already formally studied it in the unit schedule: i.e. you can read ahead and use ideas and theories from weeks outside of 1-7, or use another textbook or source.
  1. The articles used must be dated on/after June 1, 2022.
The articles that you use must have appeared in the media source on/after June 1, 2022. The media articles can be about events that occurred pre-1 June 2022. If the article header is dated prior to June 1, 2022, it will receive 0 marks regardless of the quality of content discussion.
  1. Journal articles: are they print media?
Each article must be from the print media (newspaper article, magazine article, internet newspaper or internet magazine article). The articles that you select must have at least 200 words of text. Please note that academic journal articles are not regarded as print media for the purpose of this assignment.
  1. Can I use one source (e.g., same Newspaper) for all of the articles?
Yes, you can, use the same source (eg., The Age website, or New York times, The Guardian) for both the articles. Nonetheless, do note the articles should be about 2 different organisations and 2 different business ethics issues.

You need to treat each media article as an individual piece of assessment with respective marks (so 2 articles x 25 marks). Accordingly, there should be no common introduction and conclusion sections.

Selection of business ethics issues and articles is your choice, and part of the evaluation process. Place the combined reference list in alphabetical order after the discussion of the 2 media articles, in other words, at the end of the document.
