Module 6 Discussion: Topics for Future Exploration
Discussion Instructions:Respond to at least 2 other students' posts (100-150) words minimum per response).
Student one:Kohlberg's theory of moral development is similar to Erikson's theory of psychosocial development in that they both look at how certain aspects of people's identities are formed and they both acknowledge that they are formed in stages and are developed over time. The theory of moral development looks at how a person would respond and the choice they would make in real life based on a set of or a specific circumstance(s) in a given situation. Whereas the theory of psychosocial development looks at the personality of a person and how their personal experiences in life will shape who they are. I believe that who you are can drastically change given the right experience. And who you are and what you believe can be greatly altered in how you would respond morally can change over one's lifetime and that response can change multiple times, as well as the reasoning that supports the response. I believe it is important to understand that as human beings, we have the right and autonomy to change our perspectives and beliefs and understanding of morality, justice, and social equity and belonging. I believe that it would worthwhile to explore how evolving American culture has influenced what America has deemed as socially acceptable and morally good, especially within the last 50 or 60 years. So much has changed in the last 10 to 20 years that even that short time frame can also be studied and noticeable difference can be made within our society.
Student two:Kohlberg's theory is based on moral reasoning. Simply he believed that people's understanding of right from wrong changes as they get older. Based on his findings he identified three levels of moral development and within those three levels, two stages represented a more sophisticated and complex explanation. Now Erikson's theory is based on growth and development. Simply, the older we get the more our feelings, thoughts, and relationships change. As we get older, we are learning to understand ourselves and get along with others around us.
Differences: Kohlberg mainly focuses on how people think about being right or wrong, Erikson talks about how people deal with various challenges in life such as building relationships and trying to understand who they are as individuals.
Similarities: Both of these theories explore how people change over time as they get older and they also both have stages that everyone goes through over time.
I think both of these theories help people understand who they are based on their cultures, but at the same time every culture is very different and each one has their own sets of beliefs.
Regarding contemporary topics: There are so many that impact the human lifespan development. Social Media & Smart phones; and the impact it has on the whole human race and how it is impacting our communication abilities.
Mental health: Although we touched on this a bit during this class, during and after Covid I have seen more and more people seek support for their mental health. This is still something that affects many of us and we keep it a secret.
Work-life balance: Another great one in the past this was not as big thin as it is now. After Covid this became a big topic and it was affecting many individuals worldwide.
