Module 7: Written Assignment Name: _Leah Bowen Translations of graphs andes s and figures play an important Section: 60 computer graphics. In side scroller video games, the background often is translated to give the illusion that the player in the game is moving. A simple scene of a mountain and an airplane is shown in the following figures. To make it appear to the player as though the airplane were flying to the right, the image of the mountain could be translated horizontally to the left, as shown. Let the bottom edge of the videogame display be represented by the x -axis, the leftmost edge of the videogame display be represented by the y -axis, and let x and y represent the horizontal and vertical distance from the bottom leftmost corner in centimeters, respectively. 1. Plot an airplane at point (5,10) on the graph provided. (1 point) Airplane 2. Suppose that the mountain can be modeled by f(x) = -(x -3)2+9. Use the vertex and four additional points of the function to draw the curve representing the mountain. (4 points) vertex : ( 3,9 ) X 5 2 18 5 3. The plane is fixed on the screen. In order to make it appear as though the airplane has risen by 5 centimeters and moved horizontally to the right by 2 centimeters, the mountain will have to move down 5 centimeters and left 2 centimeters. Draw the curve representing the mountain in its new position. (5 points) 4. Write the equation h(x) of the function that represents this "new" mountain. (5 points) f ( x ) = - ( x - 1 ) 74 . The video game maker decides to put a sheep graphic on the edge of the "new" mountain appearing on the bottom of the videogame display (i.e. x - axis). a. Algebraically how could he calculate where he needs to put the sheep? (2 points) Solve for the x b. How far from the leftmost edge of the display (i.e. y - axis) is the sheep located? Use your picture to double check your answer. (3 points) About 3 centimeters from the leftmost edge
