Problem Case Scenario Daniel Sim had worked in Japan soon after he graduated with an electro-mechanical engineering degree in Singapore. He had been enthralled by Japanese culture and way of working and he wanted to experience these first-hand. Whilst in Japan, he was mesmerised by small Japanese trucks called the Keitora that could navigate narrow streets and be adapted for all kinds of uses be-fitting the Japanese way of life. The images of the keitora would soon transform his life. A good video of what the keitora vehicle looks like and its versatility can be seen at this site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIPZ-EvAyWY After five years in Japan, Daniel returned to Singapore to found his own start-up business called Creative Two-Wheeler (CTW). He is a motorcycle enthusiast and he wants to focus on a business related to this type of vehicle. He has observed that car ownership is a bane to many motorists in Singapore. Practically, all expenses associated with cars are high: COE (Certificate of Entitlement), petrol, servicing, parking charges, road tax, insurance and the occasional traffic fines. He also notes that the Government is trying to control the vehicle population in land- scarce Singapore. The road network is already almost fully built-up. And, indeed, there are plans to reduce private car usage capacity through lane reduction in favour of public buses, pedestrians and cyclists. An example is the North-South Corridor (NSC) road plan as succinctly explained in the following article: Land Transport Authority (n.d.). North-South Corridor. Land Transport Authority, Government of Singapore. https://www.Ita.gov.sg/content/ltagov/en/upcoming projects/road_commuter_facilitiesorth_south_corridor.htmlDaniel has a hunch that in the coming years, the motorcycle will be the preferred private vehicle. Except for occasional spikes in COE prices, it is low in price and relatively inexpensive to maintain. With its small engine, it is also more environmentally-friendly, particularly if its power train is electric. In his mind, it would be an ideal vehicle for a high-density urban city like Singapore. Demand for such a 2-wheel motorised vehicle would increase markedly if its function could be enhanced to embrace features associated with smaller cars and trucks. Creative Two-Wheeler offers bespoke services to convert existing motorcycles. He has the skill and technologies to provide three types of conversion services: a) From petrol engines to electric powered motorcycles Standard motorcycles to 2-wheel mobility vehicles with auto-balancing for senior citizens c) Addition of mobile kitchenette similar to food vans. Daniel is still on the lookout for other creative ideas to increase the range of conversion services. He is acutely aware of the need to comply with LTA (Land Transport Authority) regulations. So, for his current business, he will work only with customers who already have gotten in-principle approval from LTA for conversion. Daniel's vision is that one day, Creative Two-Wheeler will be a manufacturer producing its own range of electric-powered custom-motorcycles suitable for a sustainable world. The very thought reminds him of the versatility of the keitora and keeps him well-focused on continual innovation. Question 1 (a) Suggest another product-based concept that Creative Two-Wheeler (CTW) can add to its range of conversion services. Describe and appraise how your product concept can be considered innovative. Show a diagram, drawing or image of your proposed innovation. What is customer co-creation? Inspect two (2) ways that CTW can make use of the customer in the context of your proposed bespoke service? (Note: Images downloaded from the Internet are not allowed and will be scored as zero. Your diagram can be hand-sketched or drawn. You may adapt and re-process existing images provided you cite the source of the original unmodified images.) Word Limit: 500 words (25 marks) (b) Construct the steps of how you will develop your proposed product and service by describing 4 (four) key activities in the overall development process involving both product and service. (Note: At least one activity each from the product and service development processes need to be discussed.) Word Limit: 500 words (25 marks)
