Monopolistic competition is a type of market structure in which many companies are present in an industry and produce similar but differentiated products. I was recently shopping at Walmart, I needed milk and I know I can get a good size gallon there at a good price. This is a good example of a COMPETITIVE MARKET because I can also buy milk at Publix, Target, even a 7Eleven store. Each store imposes its own price although the same brands are sold in all markets. None of the companies enjoys a MONOPOLY and each company operates independently without taking into account the actions of other companies so prices vary depending on the size, whether it is a half gallon or the whole gallon, whether it is whole milk or 2% reduced fat milk, either chocolate or strawberry flavored etc. For all this, prices vary, among other brands. For example, the Great Value brand, which is the Walmart brand, has a gallon of whole milk for $3.04 while a half-gallon is $1.82. The Lactaid brand has whole milk for $6.38 per gallon, while Borden is $5.00. Usually the products regardless of the brands are together, now the brands that sell more cheaply are together and the most expensive ones are on the other side. Generally, it is not always the case, the store brand is cheaper compared to others so consumers concerned about costs can opt for these. While there are brands that are obviously expensive but that despite that have a very loyal select audience, such as Organic Valley, this brand of milk is sold at Target for $5.29 while at Walmart it is sold for $7.96 despite the high cost it is sold in either store
