Most accounts of bikers, whether based on fact or fiction, divide motorcycle riders into two distinct camps: authentic (or real) bikers and posers (or wannabes) (e.g., Barbieri, 2007). As with most dichotomies, dividing motorcycle riders into these two categories is overly simplistic and, for the most part, an inaccurate and misleading endeavor. Researchers tend to differentiate between "authentic" bikers - one-percenters and hardcore riders either affiliated or unaffiliated with clubs, but committed to the "biker lifestyle" - and "posers" or "wannabes" - basically everybody else who rides a cruiser or touring-style motorcycle. As best I can tell, this dichotomy originated with the one-percenters and hardcore bikers who believe they are the only real bikers. Nevertheless, there always have been and still are a wide variety of motorcycle riders who are neither one-percenters nor hardcore bikers, but also are not "posing" as them and they most certainly do not "wanna be" one of them.
