Mothers in all positions in the workplace tend to experience some sort of discrimination. It 15 well-established issue that mothers tend to earn less than women with no children. This is often referred to as the 'motherhood penalty'. This entails less job investment and promotions or mothers, loss of experience and a decrease in work ethic. Benard and Correll (2010) highlight the 'normative' wage penalty mothers experience in the workplace and state that mothers are thought of as 'less committed to their paid work.' This actively exists within more than a dozen countries currently. As stated by Benard and Correll (2010), over a voman's life span, the penalty cumulates into quite a high disadvantage for them. This is also eferred to as a "per-child wage penalty" (Correll, Benard & Paik, 2007)
