Motivating Behavior
Module 5 centered on the topic of motivation. The module's content introduced you to various models and frameworks for addressing motivation issues in organizations.
- Recall that we watched and discussed a video case: "Clearing Motivation for Takeoff." The case centers on a supervisor's attempt to implement his organization's (SkyBlue's) pay-for-performance program and shows the pushback he received from his direct reports.
Leverage the model of intrinsic motivation and concepts covered in the related "Drive" video we discussed in class to help SkyBlue better motivate its employees.
- Briefly explain the intrinsic motivation model.
- Based on the intrinsic motivation model, explain employees' reactions when they heard about the new incentive plan.
- Applying your knowledge of intrinsic motivation, formulate three high-quality recommendations about how SkyBlue should motivate employee performance in their two areas of concern.
Note: You may make reasonable assumptions about the case situation. But please clearly state them.
- A ubiquitous problem in project teams and a crucial concern of students when they are assigned to them is that one or more members will slack off and/or check out, and they might do so at the worst possible time(s) for the team.
Use the OPM and your knowledge of work motivation to address the slacking/checking out problem.
- Based on your teamwork experiences at UW and beyond, what behaviors usually constitute slacking off and checking out in project teams? Identify a minimum of three.
- What is one driver of these behaviors in each of the OPM root cause Frames (People, Structure, Culture, and Communication Technology)?
- Leverage your knowledge of motivation to craft three recommendations for mitigating the slacking/checking out problem. Use a different motivation theory (intrinsic motivation can be one) as a basis for each recommendation. In other words, each motivation recommendation should be grounded in a different theory (equity, expectancy, etc.).
