Motivation (6 marks) Three months ago, Ed, the owner of Lucky Ed's Casino, decided to change the job of the employee group called *the Smileys* - these are employees on the casino floor. Ed gave the Smileys full control of the main- floor slot machine area because he believes that the employees can handle the responsibility. So, Smileys work without supervisors. Ed called this change the team concept and he emphasized that all Smileys should help each other strive for excellence. Smileys do it all - from giving customers change to fixing the slot machines, hiring and training coworkers, cleaning ashtrays, and telling clients a favorite joke. If customers have any concerns, they deal directly with a Smiley who wears a bright red pin so that customers will look for them on the floor. Lucky Ed's has a reputation as the "Friendliest Little Casino" because Ed says over and over that it is important to make a customer feel good with a smile or a joke or a kind word because customers will carry their good mood into their work and private lives. Casino staff can help the world be friendlier, one customer at a time. Slot machines attract customers to Lucky Ed's. It is the hard work and friendly attitude of the Smileys encourage customers to stay longer, and the friendly attitude will keep customers coming back. 1.
