Movie Night II

Gus taught at Bigtime School of Law, which owned and operated a nice facility. Gus enjoyed hosting a monthly gathering of students and faculty to watch famous movies dealing with legal issues. Gus and a few students would donate lots of food and drink to be enjoyed by all before the movie started. Students would sometimes invite family members or friends to join them. It was held in one of the large classrooms on campus during regular hours when the building was open and security was present. No academic credit was offered for this activity, nor was Gus paid extra to host the event.

One night, when they were showing To Kill a Mockingbird, a large group had gathered. Mostly students attended, but a few of their friends were also there. At the end of the movie, while everyone was getting ready to leave, a mild earthquake shook the building, and a large light fixture fell down and struck Pal in the head, causing serious injuries. Pal was homeless person who spent a lot of time on the street near the school. He saw the flyer for the movie and decided to enter the building to join the gathering to get some of the food that would served. He ended up sitting in the back watching the movie when the injury occurred. Pal had been careful to enter the building while the security workers were distracted.

An inspection of the light fixture would have revealed that the hardware used to hold the fixture to the ceiling had been in a state of dangerous disrepair and needed to be fixed. No one at Bigtime had inspected the lamp fixtures in the ten years since they were installed, and no one knew it was a risk.

Doug, a student who attended the event, called for an ambulance on his cell phone. Doug assured everyone who was leaving the event that he would make sure Pal made it to the hospital. Everyone left the building and security locked it up, leaving Doug and Pal waiting outside for the ambulance.

Doug waited with Pal for an hour, but the ambulance didn't arrive. Doug then decided to take the bus home so he could see the end of the championship basketball game, leaving Pal alone to wait for the ambulance. Thirty minutes after Doug left, Pal was shot in the shoulder as the result of a drive-by shooting. Doug knew the area was home to some small-time criminal element, but no one had ever before heard of anything like this.
