Mr and Mrs Hunt found themselves alone as pensioners; their children were no longer staying with them. Loneliness and boredom were a problem. With their background in health and human resources, they wanted to stay active while contributing positively to the economy of the country. That is how Emgazini Lodge was born. It started as a three-bedroomed house, and later grew to eight bedrooms. Emgazini Lodge is situated in Crawthorne in the north of Johannesburg. It is close to Kyalami, which is famous for its popular Grand Prix racing track. In the vicinity, there are shopping centres, conference venues, restaurants, bars, casinos, etc. The couple made a decision to take on a lifelong learning process and entered into a new sector tourism. They were interested in professional growth and were open to change. They received training, professional support and advice from Tsogo Sun. Mr Hunt then enrolled for a guesthouse management certificate at the University of Western Cape. According to Mrs Hunt, Joining this industry meant we had to change our mindset and be creative; we learn as we go. Emgazini is your home away from home. We learnt about communication, marketing, financial as well as operational issues. We relied on each others strengths. We are yet to overcome challenges such as incorporating technology in our business, dealing with social media and ensuring sustainability. On the other hand, educational empowerment and financial freedom have been our highlight at Emgazini Lodge. We are gaining confidence every day as we are compliant with emergency services equipment, food supply services, a liquor licence and insurance. Owning a business requires a certain mind shift, which must come from within.
