Mr. C is a 58-year-old man with terminal cancer. He and his family have decided that he will stay at home as long as possible. You are the home care assistant going into the home every morning five days a week.

The C family is planning to move Mr. C's bedroom down to the main floor. They are requesting your help with ideas to make him more comfortable. The following describes the client's home situation:

The C's live in a two-storey home built in the 1940's. There are three bedrooms upstairs with a four-piece bath. The tub has whirlpool jets. The staircase has 14 steps.

The main floor has a kitchen, dining room, bathroom and living room. The kitchen and dining room are separated by a swinging door; the living room and dining room are partially separated by a wood railing, three and a half feet high.

The bathroom on main floor has a shower stall, toilet, and sink. It is located just off of the kitchen.

Laundry facilities, family room, storage area, and Mr. C's wood workshop are in the basement.

The living room has a large picture window facing a quiet street. The dining room has a large window with a view of the back yard.

The C's have many supportive friends and family who visit regularly.

Mrs. C is unsure whether to put Mr. C's bed in the dining room or living room; she asks for the home care assistant's opinion. With the above information, discuss the pros and cons of each room.

Mr. C finds that a bath in the whirlpool tub is beneficial, but the stairs are becoming too difficult for him. What options does he have for bathing?

Mrs. C discloses that she is especially concerned about Mr. C at night when she will be asleep upstairs. Can you suggest alternatives that would address this concern?

As you get to know Mr. C, he tells you that his hobbies are gardening, bird watching, wood working, reading, and watching TV. He reveals that he would like to write letter to each of his children and grandchildren. Because of his declining strength and writing abilities, he has not done this. What suggestions could you offer to help him accomplish his goal and make his days more interesting?
