Mr. Marcos, a famous local politician, read a newspaper story written about Ms. Cook, an influential columnist writing for the Vancouver Sun. In the story, Ms. Cook mistakenly associated Mr. Marcos with some well-known people recently charged with illegal drug distribution. Ms. Cook had been given the information by Mr. Jones, a reliable source who had given her accurate information in the past. But, Mr. Jones had Mr. Marcos mixed up with another person with the same name. Unaware that an honest mistake had been made, Mr. Marcos was so infuriated by the news article that he immediately went to the newspaper office and forced his way into the office where Ms. Cook worked, kicked in the door to her office, went over to the desk, pointed his finger at her and yelled, "If you were not such a rotten little worm, I would smash your face in". Ms. Cook, in panic, grabbed a heave paperweight off her desk and when MR. Marcos had his head turned, as the other people in the office rushed in, Ms. Cook hit him over the head with the paperweight. Mr. Marcos was seriously injured.
