Municipal solid waste incineration in Long Beach (respond by Saturday, April 13) Most California communities dispose of their municipal solid waste in landfills. The City of Long Beach, however, incinerates their waste in a facility (SERRF) that produces energy. The facility claims that it uses state-of-the-art pollution control technology to control air emissions, but nonetheless studies show concentrations of air pollution that appear to emanate from this facility. The facility is located on the west side of Long Beach, just upwind from Downtown Long Beach and low-income residential areas of the city. The city is currently evaluating a request from the operator to continue operating the facility for another 20 years.
