Music, Art, and Play Integrated Unit Plan (Pre-k New York)
For your homework, you will develop a 2-week unit plan (10 instructional days) focusing on pre-K music, art, and game skills by integrating reading/language arts and your choice of Math, Science, or Social Studies. Remember to bring the regulations of your state (New York) and put all the references and citations of your research. Remembering that they are your ideas and not others
STEP 1 (Grade Level)
The theme of your unit plan has already been determined: "Friendship." How you approach this topic is entirely up to you. You can go down the path of teaching about character, diversity, what it means to be a good friend, etc. The grade level for your unit plan (this is an early childhood course, so keep your unit plans at Grade 3 and below).
While we encourage you to look online and from other available resources for ideas, keep in mind that your unit plan should be your original and not a copy of the help you find.
STEP 2 (Draft Unit Plan)
Once you have selected your topic and brainstormed the direction you would like to go, you should begin planning the overall plan for the unit. Once again, review the sample provided. This is where you will identify the national and state standards on which your content will focus. For this assignment, we must address the standards for the following content areas: Reading/Language Arts, Art, Music, Play, and your choice of Math, Science, or Social Studies. Once you've identified the standards and targeted your content to address those standards, you'll want to list your instructional strategies and assessments. When thinking about instructional strategies, don't forget to include all types of learning styles. Similarly, when it comes to assessments, you should consider varied assessments (informal and formal) andformative and summative assessments for your unit.
STEP 3 (Unit Timeline) Now that you've researched the standards and developed the activities and assessments you'd like to incorporate into your unit plan, it's time to begin mapping out your instructional schedule. You will notice that while the timeline is comprehensive, it does not list step by step what will happen each day. Remember, you are thinking of the "big picture" and not putting together a day-to-day lesson plan. Instead, the timeline allows you to see how the topics fit together and ensure a natural instruction flow.
STEP 4 (The Unit Plan - Final Draft)
When you are ready to start putting together the final unit plan, you will need to put everything into the template provided at the end of this step.
