Argue Your Case

1. Your state's air-quality agency is wrestling with whether or not to permit diesel passenger cars to be sold in your state. Formulate an argument one way or the other, drawing on the latest information on "clean diesel" technology.

2. You're the CEO of an East Coast utility that currently gets coal for your power plants from a mountaintop-removal operation in West Virginia. The coal has a high sulfur content, and under the EPA rules, your power plants are going to have to emit less sulfur dioxide. Two of your vice presidents are arguing: One wants to install state-of-the-art scrubbers to remove SO2 from flue gases; the other wants to switch to low-sulfur coal strip-mined in Wyoming. Each VP claims their approach is more sound environmentally. What do you argue?
