It's time to wrap up your consulting engagement with your company.

Like many companies, your company's executive leadership wants to integrate sustainability across the enterprise. The goal is to creeate a culture where "every job is a sustainability job" since every role in a business can make a difference. This is exactly what your company's leadership is asking you to deliver.

In your last assignment "Identifying and Understanding Impact" , you focused on understanding the main impacts of your company. You selected an issue that is relevant (aka "material") to your company, looked at it through your current understanding and then again after gaining a deeper perspective.( the issue was tackling e-wast)

Now, how do you make addressing this impact, everyone's job at the company? You have chosen to start small and then grow the program from there. You will start with the part of the business that you know well--the one that aligns with your major. So if you are a marketing major, you can focus on marketing or sales. If you are supply chain, you can focus on procurement or logistics. Imagine what your major can uniquely contribute to sustainability

Assignment Steps

1. First, let's make sure you understand how powerful your major is when it comes to sustainability! We'll do this in two ways.

Let's get started: using just your current understanding, make a list using bullet points of all the ways you can think that your major contributes to the sustainability performance of a company. For this first part, don't do any research online yet. Just reflect on your current perspective and understanding. How does your major contribute to sustainability? If you can only think of one way, that's fine. If you can think or more than one, that is great too. Just brainstorm and make a list.

Example. Let's pretend my major is Chemical Engineering. My answer to this first question might look like this:

      • Chemical engineers can
        • creeate new materials that are non-toxic
        • creeate ways to recycle plastic more efficiently
        • detect chemicals in products or in manufacturing
        • find ways of making products from waste streams like maybe we can make products from carbon dioxide

3. Navigate to your major using the main buttons on the home page or the menu in the upper right corner. For your major, read carefully the following two sections:

  • Overview
  • Concepts: click on each concept and read the description, examples, and watch any videos

Great! Now you really know how important your major is to sustainability! 4. Using (1) what you learned about Employee Engagement from the Step by Step Guide to Sustainability Planning and (2) what you learned about the relationship between your major and sustainability, recommend a Training Plan (see page 143) for your company focused on the department/function most aligned with your major. For example, as a chemical engineer major I would develop a Training Plan for, let's say, process engineers working at my company's chemical plant.

For your Training Plan, you must explain which department of your company the training is for (I selected the process engineering department), select one Concept from Major Sustainability you want to train on, and answer the following questions from the book. The questions and short examples are below.

If your organization and your sustainability effort are large enough, you will want to develop a thoughtful approach to ensuring that everyone is trained in the key concepts and activities of the effort. How to prepare. Let your implementation plan be your guide. Look at your schedule and your project ideas and let them suggest what people will need to know and when they will need to know it. How to conduct this activity. Use the form in Table 9.4 during one of your planning meetings. Start with your communication plan to see if any of the stakeholders need training and then add any special populations or departments within your organization. For each stakeholder ask the following: What do we want them to be able to do that they are not doing now (skills)? What will they need to know in order to demonstrate the behaviour you identied above. Or should they be able to explain to others in their departments (knowledge)? ' What materials or affiliations will help them to obtain this new knowledge and apply their new skills (resources and afliations)
