My friend is a critical care pulmonologist at Vanderbilt Hospital. He is on a panel that reviews requests to put patients on ECMO--an advanced and resource-intensive treatment that can sometimes save severely ill patients (you can think of it almost like life support, but here it's being used to help rehabilitate patients). But there are only so many machines, rooms, and staff to treat patients with ECMO, so the panel has to make tough decisions, especially during this Covid pandemic. Imagine there's a request for a 41 year old patient--a nurse--in otherwise good health and a 26 year old patient--a high school teacher--who has moderate asthma, but is otherwise in good health. There are only resources to put one on ECMO. Comment with which one you approve and why. You can say what other information you would want to know. Your comment can be as short as a sentence or as long as a paragraph.
