Part 1 - Self-Management Tools: Using the book section titled "Creating a leak-Proof Self-Management System" in Chapter 4 of On Course, first review the six selfmanagement tools listed. - Select only one or two of these that seem like a good choice(s) for your own self-management system, but DO NoT choose the monthly calendar tool. - Then, write a paragraph that describes how you can use your tool(s) to prioritize and help you meet your most important goals. Include specific examples of how you can use them in your daily work school and home life. Part 2 - Quadrants: Make a list of 1215 specific actions you have taken in the past couple days, including at least one weekday, as well as work, school, social, and fun. The actions will be specific as if someone could have recorded you doing them with a camera; they can be school, work, or homerelated. 1. Fill in each action from your list in the appropriate quadrant in the chart below. - If the chart doesn't transfer over well, a cotegorized list is fine. 2. After each action, put the approsimate amount of time you spent doing the activity. 3. You may not have something to put into each quadront. That's ok! Example: Quadrant IV might be filled with actions such as these: - Watched TV (2 hrs) - Phone call to family member (1 hr) - Played online games (3 hrs) - Texted with friends (1 hr) The purpose of this assignment is to practice the language of personal responsibility. Learning to translate statements from our inner defender or inner critic into Creator statements resembling our inner guide is one way to master the language of successful people. Then, rewrite the statements using words of a Creator. The two keys to Creator language are taking ownership of a problem and taking positive actions to solve it. When you respond as if you are responsible for a bad situation, then you are empowered to do something about it. Check out chapter 2 of On Course for models. Focus on your goal and a strategy to achieve it, Leave out all of the excuses and explanations - that's victim speech. Start your sentences with "I will" of "Im going to." (Yoda says "do or do not - there is no try.") Dont sary "if 1," I should" or "I could." Be decisive and goal oriented. Statement stemming from the inner critic and inner defender: Example: If theyd do something about parking an campus I wouldn't be late so often. Rewrite: I will leove the house 15 minutes earlier so I will have more time to find a parking spot, and get to class on time. 1. Im failing because no one in my family is good at math. I think we've got defective math genes. 2. Im too shy to ask questions in class even whien I'm confused. 3. She's a lousy instructor. That's why I failed the first test. 4. The financial aid form is too complicated to fill out. 5. I work nights so 1 didn't have time to do the assignment. - Second, write 1-2 paragraphs that answer the following questions about inner voices and mindsets. Do you find yourself more likely to blame yourself or others or to find solutions? Be sure to give at least one recent example from work, school or home.
