My result of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) was not surprising to me, because I truly don't associate gender to a lot of what stems out of culture, traditions, and values. Unconscious bias is a stereotype or a belief that we hold about a certain group of people, Times may have changed, and our opinion may have changed as well. But somewhere in the back of our minds, we still follow those stereotypes. The problem is that these stereotypes have been so deeply ingrained in our brains that we don't even notice them taking place.
This result shows no association to a gender type to having careers, hence decisions around key areas in the workplace will be based on competence rather than on biases. Having the opportunity to make decisions in the workplace, will be based on my core values rather than on biases. I need to be aware of my biases, and so need to take a lot of IATs, which can help me examine my thoughts and beliefs and to identify my assumptions. It is equally important to engage with people who we perceive as different with open mind and not just stereotype them. In addition, I will need to get trainings and get retrained to address my biases. As much as possible I will strive to treat others with respect, empathy, and fairness to promote a cordial environment.
