Nabila is a 15-year-old girl brought to you for counseling by her mother. Nabila's parents were immigrated to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia. The mother reported that Nabila made a suicide threat while in school and the school authorities contacted her and referred her to a counselor in the community for further assessment and care. Nabila reported that there are certain circumstances because of which she feels desperate and hopeless. You observed that Nabila had a depressed affect. She wore a hijab (a traditional Muslim head covering). Her appearance was clean but disheveled. During the intake, Nabila hesitantly shared that she was in a relationship with another girl who was 16 and that was causing distress within herself. Nabila further reported that she has not shared this with her parents who are staunch Muslims. She expressed fear that this would bring much disappointment to her parents and break her relationship with them. She was even afraid they would excommunicate her. Nabila was the youngest in the family and she had three brothers who were older than her.
