Name Partner PHY 171 Lab: Free fall Objective: To be able to measure the acceleration of gravity (g) by measuring the times of fall of objects over a measured distance. Theory: as it was discovered in the previous lesson of this course a free-falling item is one that is falling simply because of gravity. A free-falling object experiences a downward acceleration of 9.8 m/s^2 (on Earth). The acceleration of any object moving only as a result of gravity is referred to as the acceleration due to gravity. In fact, this quantity, known as the acceleration due gravity, is so significant to physics that it has its own distinctive symbol, the letter g. The most precise measurement of the gravitational acceleration is 9.8 m/s^2. There are slight variations in this numerical value (to the second decimal place) that are dependent primarily upon on altitude. If an object is released from a height of "h," the relationship between the heigh of fall and the time of fall is: h=~gt? Procedure: 1) In this lab you drop an object and measure its time of fall to calculate the acceleration of gravity ("g= 9.8 m/s^2"), this would be the accepted value. Begin by downloading the free thyphox app from the app store or google play store. Information on the app can be found here. 2) We will be using the acoustic stopwatch. Here are a few images (on iphone) of how to download the app and navigate to the acoustic stopwatch. It will be the same on Android phones
