In this chapter we talked about power and communication. For some reason this chapter makes me think of the Uncle Ben from Spider-Man telling Peter that with "great power comes great responsibility." This rings true with communication, the words we say, how we say them and the power we hold in ourselves and over other people. There are six types of power individuals possess: coercive, reward, legitimate, referent, expert, and informational. Honestly, I feel like I use all of them every day with my kids. I try one and it doesn't work so I try another, I try and communicate that I'm in charge and I hold the power but most of the time they don't believe me unless my husband is home. Then he backs me up and tells them I'm in charge and they normally listen. For your post:
- Tell us which of the 6 individual powers you find to me most useful. Give an example.
- Tell us how you make sure you use that power effectively but also responsibly.
