The main theme of chapter 2 is the moral code of a leader. This chapter is about a tribal leader named Olonkwo in a Nigenan village called Umuofia. It tells us his life story that ends in a tragedy. His story is told to demonstrate how hife experiences shape ones moral code. It also pounts out negative impact the moral can have if it is not changed over time. Why are finlure important for a leader to experience? Failue strips away and reveals. And what we sometimes find is that a moral code, rooted in personal and community values, is less sound than it seems. Pg 39 What moral code for a leader? According to the book a moral code is a core set of values and principles that guides ones behavior and actions Pg31 What makes a leader a good leader? A good leader is able to acknowledge failures, reflect on the actions that were made and hold themselves accountable without blaming others for their own mistakes. Pg. 41 How flexible is my moral code? The moral code has to be flexible and change overtime, it ahould not be set in stone. In Okonkwo life story we see that that his moral code helpd ham succeed early on in life but since this set core values and principles dide't adapt and change over time it led to his downfall. Pg32 Do I have the courage to reconsider? Okonkwo had plenty of time to reconsider his moral code and teflect on where he went wrong during his time in exile. Instead of doing this he continued on the same path and not trying to change his moral code. Becabse there was no change it didn't end well for him. Pg. 45 What is a moral compass used for? A moral compass is used to help decide right from wrong. It helps differentiate between the two The moral compass is like a needle guiding a leader to do what is believed to be the right thing to do. Pg.33 The main take away from chapter 2 that I thought of was that there is always something that we can learn good or bad. Failurer can teach a person a lot, even though it may seem bad at first there is something good we can take away from it. It is very important to reflect on the actions that we make because they can have a negative effect on us and the people around us. It also is important to hold ourselves accountable, its easy to put the on blame someone else but the right thing to do is look in the miror and see where we went wrong and fix the problem. Chapter 2 of Questions of Character: Illuminating the Heart of Leadership Through Literature talks about moral code and the importance of sustaining a strong moral code through all aspects of your life. Although individuals like Okonkwo find themselves in challenging siltuations that challenge their moral code, it is important to maintain a strong moral compass. Although Okonkwo didnt maintain his moral compass, people can leam from the actions or reactions other have and grow their morals through the action of others 1. Should individuals require a good moral code from their leaders? "we want leaders with good moral clarity, who can guide and inspire organizations, especially in tough times" (page 32) 2. Should individuals always follow their moral compass even if it knowingly harms or damages the company? "Leaders need moral codes that are as complex, varied, and subtle as the situations in which they often find themselves. This does not mean abandoning basic values or adopting more relativism. embracing a wider set of human values and understanding them personally and emotionally (page 33 ) 3. Is self destruction applicable if a moral compass is broken? Morals are evolved over lime through education and adaptation of one's self. As we fail and other fail around us, we use these lossons as a way of growing and adapting our meral compass (page 37) 5. Does our ever-changing fears evolve our morals though life? Although our fears change as we change through our professional or personal life ovolves, our morals should stay focused on the task of succeeding and helping others around us improve and prosper. (page 39 ) 6. In times of hardship, does seeking wisdom help or hurt our moral code to find answers? Furthering wisdom can never hurt to improve ones way of life, but altering your moral code wont help satisfy the answers of tough questions. (page 48) This chapter helped understand the importance of sticking to a moral code of ethics and adapting yourself to overcome tough challenges that come your way. It is important to keep moving forward and understand obstacles will be thrown your way, but overcoming them with strong beliefs in your mind and soul and continue to create balance within one's self for the prosperity of others that are important in your life.
