Develop an understanding of some of the core characteristics of the mainstream and critical perspectives. We generally nd that a core characteristic of the mainstream perspective has a (more or less) opposite counterpart in the critical perspective. Pick two of these sets of contrasting characteristics to discuss in your essay. Then, examine the McKinsey report for any illustrations of these characteristics. The report, published by McKinsey in 2020, speaks to the challenges of, and experiences with, technology in organisations. In McKinsey's analysis of the complexity of technology, the report displays different understandings of technology that can be linked to characteristics of mainstream and critical perspectives. The McKinsey report can be found here (https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/mckinsey- digital/cur-insights/how-to-become-tech-forward-a-technology-transformation-approach-that-works) and on Moodle. You should think of the McKinsey document not as a factual document, but as an organisational 'artefact' that reects the writers' world views, including assumptions and beliefs about what is true, right or appropriate. World views will affect what is written about and how these things are written about in relation to technology in organising. It is important to remember that this essay assesses the depth of understanding of the mainstream and critical perspectives, not of your understanding of technology. As you plan and write it, ask yourself whether your focus is correct. Drawing explicitly on academic sources is required to help you highlight similarities, distinctions and tensions between mainstream and critical perspectives. This is not a research essay and it is quite possible to get high marks without going beyond the assigned readings. Viewing the lectures should make it easier to understand the essential elements of these readings (or at least help you work through what you do not yet understand). You may also choose to read and refer to some of the additional sources referred to in the lectures but this is not required. If you choose to go beyond these resources, be aware that you may nd it difcult to distinguish the perspectives at this stage in the Unit and this may make it tricky to identify appropriate academic sources for yourself. Word limit is 1200 words (+/- 10%). This does not include your reference list. The word limit is there to help develop your ability to synthesise arguments and write in a concise style. Presentation requirements: You are required to submit a fully formatted, typed essay following academic conventions surrounding referencing, structure and style. For more information please refer to this helpful page. Remember that clarity of prose is important - not only in terms of clearly communicating your ideas to the examiner (thus evidencing your knowledge), but showing your depth of understanding (since being able to articulate ideas in an accessible prose signies a high level of comprehension).
