PHYSIC 171: INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS LAB I UMASS BOSTON (FALL 2022) Laboratory 6: The Simple Pendulum Pre-lab Assignment (20 points) Adapted from PhET Simulations Print Name Johan Guerrero Lab Section Date 11 /1 2082 TA Please answer the following questions before class. You will be required to turn answers in at the beginning of the laboratory section. Late pre-labs will not be accepted under any circumstances. 1. Write a purpose for this lab in its entirety. (5 points) The purpose of this Lab is to measure the time OF 30 oscillations AT 3 Different angles. Also to calculate the acceleration due to gravity , Then compare the valves to calculate the percent ERROR . 2. Start by reading the manual. In this part, we will use PhET simulations to calculate the acceleration due to gravity. Go to the link: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/pendulum-lab/latest/pendulum-lab_en.html You will find Intro, Energy, and Lab. Feel free to explore all sections. For this pre-lab exercise, select "Lab." Pendulum Lab Lab - On the top right of the screen, fix Length 1 (L) at 0.70 m, Mass 1 at 1.1 Kg, the gravity at 9.81 m/s2, and the friction at None. LAB 6: SIMPLE PENDULUM 1 PHYSIC 171: INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS LAB I UMASS BOSTON (FALL 2022) Use the stopwatch (bottom left) to measure T30. Fix the pendulum at an angle, release the mass, and answer the following questions. a) Using the stopwatch, measure the time of 30 oscillations T30 for the three different angles (40, 120, and 40). (5 points) b) For each angle, calculate the acceleration due to gravity using the relation: 930 = T30/30) L. (5 points) c) Compare the values you have calculated to the fixed value of g (Gravity in PhET) by calculating the percent error for each measurement. Discuss your results. (5 points) Angle () T30 (second) 930 (m/s2) Percent error (%) 36 seconds =( 36 /30 / 9 1 / s 12 36 seconds 40 35 seconds Discussion: LAB 6: SIMPLE PENDULUM 2
