The basis of the research was to determine the factors that were leading to the increase in suicides of veterans who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqui Freedom, and how the VA was tackling the issue. In 2010, the VA released information regarding suicide and Veterans, and that the suicide rate had gone up 26% in the years of 2005-2007. 55% of Veterans were committing suicide, and that Veterans were making up 20% of the overall suicide rate in the United States. The research covers the broad age and cultural range that United States Veterans all fall under, as well as different social and economic statuses that they cover as well. There are also the Veterans that seek help and assistance from the VA and those who either chose not to or are unable to seek help. It also looks at many different factors that can increase the risk of suicide including injuries, discharges, and what war period that they served in. For instance the information for Veterans who served in the Vietnam War era and Gulf War era is harder to come by, versus the information for Veterans who served in the OEF/OIF era. It was also found that Veterans aged 20-24 as well at Veterans over the age of 65 are at the most risk for committing suicide.
