Limits To Growth
The Club of Rome, a thinktank consisting of heads of state and government, commissioned a study in the summer of 1970 to a team at MIT. This study tested and modeled economic growth compared to human development, and how those factors will affect the future. This study had computer simulations that created a model, allowing you to see what the future status of our civilization will look like. These researchers focused on five main factors that could limit growth: population growth, agricultural production, depletion of fossil fuels, industrialization, and pollution (The Club of Rome). This model concluded that our society would crash in the middle of the 21st century, around the year 2040. Donella H. Meadows, Dennis L. Meadows, Jorgen Randers, and William W. Behrens III wrote a book about the results, to inform everyone of what is to come. This book is called "The Limits to Growth."
My first question, "how can we stop or slow this impending downfall?" does not have the greatest answer. After reading the articles, I can safely say that there is nothing we can do to stop this event. However, there may be a way to slow it down. Trying to find new ways to make power and provide energy have not been successful, so "recycling, conservation and efficiency in the management of the planet's remaining accessible mineral resources will need to be undertaken carefully and cooperatively, with the assistance of cutting-edge science." (Ahmed). If we can work towards changes like this, our impact on the environment will be reduced, which in turn will slow down the depletion of our resources.
Next, many things have led to the speeding up of this process. For example, the world population in 1970 was around 3.7 billion. Now, in 2023, the population is just over 8 billion. Due to this massive increase, the impact we have on the world is also increasing. This can be from the increase in usage of cars, which causes air pollution, or the increase of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide being put into the atmosphere causing global warming. Whatever it may be, nothing good can come from an increase in population in regards to the environment.
