Social psychology is the study of personality and how we interact with each other. Both areas use basic and applied research and could be beneficial in correctional settings. One goal of correctional settings is to be able to predict if an individual is likely to re-offend. By combining the research of cognitive and social psychology, we can identify different factors that can indicate a potential reoffence. By identifying the risk factors, we can present a plan to assist individuals in how to redirect or change thinking patterns. Social psychology research has also provided insight into how offenders interact with each other, and we are able to address social inadequacies or redirect social interactions to more pro-social interactions. For example, an offender might struggle with social support, in the past those he associated with had criminal behavior or substance use issues, in an attempt to change this pattern, the offender may need direction or examples of how to interact with them. He might also struggle with making new relationships or social connections. A social psychologist can assist the individual in recognizing the patterns and help them restructure how they interact with others.
